Israel has extended a security lockdown in the West Bank till 16th march to prevent Palestinians entering Jerusalem after a weekend of protests and rioting in the city. According to Israeli daily Haaretz, Barak's decision last evening followed intelligence indicating the likelihood of more disturbances. It added that Security forces were preparing for further protests across the West Bank in response to an Israeli decision announced last week to build 1,600 new Jewish homes in East Jerusalem . The decision drew widespread condemnation including UN, EU and United States.<br/><br/>Earlier yesterday, police used tear gas and stun grenades in clashes with dozens of Palestinians at a checkpoint between the West Bank and Jerusalem, while four Palestinians were arrested amid mounting tensions.<br/><br/>Meanwhile in a related development, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced to establish a committee to probe Israel's announcement this week to construct 1,600 new housing units in East Jerusalem that unfolded during U.S. Vice President Biden's visit to Israel. The announcement led to a diplomatic crisis with the United States. The team will be headed by Director-General of the Prime Minister's Office, Eyal Gabai, and will include members of the Interior Ministry, Housing Ministry and the Jerusalem Municipality.
