Islamabad HC suspends 26/11 accused Lakhvi 's detention order

In Pakistan, the Islamabad High Court today cancelled the detention of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, a key planner of the 2008 Mumbai terror attack.

The court suspended the government notification of putting Lakhvi under house arrest after an anti-terrorism court granted him bail. Justice Noorul Haq Qureishi, hearing the petition filed by Lakhvi, said after getting bail from court, putting the accused under house arrest is illegal.

Lakhvi and six other accused have been charged with planning and executing the Mumbai attacks that took place on November 26, 2008, and left 166 people dead. The trial has been underway since 2009.

On 19th of last month, Lakhvi was detained by Pakistani authorities under provisions of Maintenance of Public Order. He was to be kept in jail for at least three months. A day earlier, he was granted bail by Islamabad Anti-Terrorism Court due to lack of evidence against him.
