ISAF defends its strategy to vacate remote border outposts

The International security Assistance force (ISAF) in Afghanistan has defended its strategy to vacate remote border outposts and concentrate on big population centers. Addressing a joint press conference with Afghan Defence ministry in Kabul today, ISAF spokesman Mr. Eric Tremblay said that international forces cannot be everywhere and have decided to operate in large population centers which can bring better security and development for the people. His comments came in wake of reports that an ISAF outpost in eastern Nuristan province along Pakistan border, which was vacated by ISAF recently, has been overtaken by Taliban and the district center is under militant control. The ISAF spokesman said the international forces are targeting to separate militants from population and following the strategy to clear, hold and build. He said that the security of Afghanistan will be handed over to Afghan security forces eventually and stressed for the latter’s training and mentoring. The ISAF spokesman accepted that security situation has deteriorated in 2009 compared to last year. Afghan defence ministry spokesman said that national forces are expected to take over security responsibility of majority of districts within two to four years.
