Iraq’s Former Deputy PM sentenced to death

Iraqi Supreme Court has sentenced the former Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz to deathon Tuesday. According to the Iraq’s semi-official Iraqiya TV Channel, the Supreme Criminal Court has ordered the execution of two other officers also along with Tariq Aziz for the elimination of the religious parties. They are former Interior Minister, Saadoun Shaker and Saddam Hussein’s Office Chief, Abed Hamid Hmoud.Tareq Aziz, who held several positions during Saddam Hussain regime, handed himself up to the U.S. troops after their occupation of Iraq in April, 2003, and had been among very few members of Saddam’s regime who escaped death till now.He held the post of Deputy Prime Minister in 1991, after holding the foreign minister’s post for a long time.AIR correspondent reports, Tareq Aziz who held the posts of foreign minister and Deputy Prime Minister during Saddam Hussain regime, handed himself up to the U.S. troops after they invaded Iraq in April, 2003, and had been among very few members of Saddam’s regime who escaped death till now.In March 2009, he was jailed for 15 years for the executions of 42 Iraqi merchants. Five months later, he was sentenced to seven years' further imprisonment for his role in the forced displacement of Kurds. Recently, Aziz had charged U.S. with having left Iraq for the wolves when Obama administration issued its decision to pull out the U.S. combat troops, despite the escalation of violence in Iraq.
