Iraqi security forces seize explosives

Iraqi security forces say they have seized explosives and arrested 25 people who planned to carry out terrorist attacks in the capital. A military spokesman said Iraqi forces confiscated 400 kilograms of powerful explosives (C4 and TNT) and 60 explosive devices during search operations throughout Baghdad on Tuesday. Government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said forces carried out the raid after receiving a tip from a citizen of possible car bombings in the city.

Authorities early on Tuesday imposed strict security procedures and restricted traffic, causing gridlock throughout Baghdad. The security operation comes as Iraq is preparing for nationwide parliamentary elections in March. Officials have warned insurgents trying to disrupt the vote could try to launch attacks as the election nears.
