Iraqi Parliament deadlock on election law unresolved

Despite intense international pressure Iraqi Members of Parliament say they would not be able to vote today on an election law that needs to be passed urgently if elections are to be held on schedule in January. The electoral law is meant to be in place at least 90 days before voting takes place. Iraq's election body said that it needs to be adopted by Tuesday. MPs say the UN has proposed compromise to the main sticking points on how candidates are to be listed on the ballot paper and the distribution of seats in the ethnically divided oil rich city of Kirkuik. But they still can not be sure when they will vote, rising concerns that the elections may have to be delayed.<br/>
