Iraq: Partial results show Maliki's coalition ahead in seven provinces

The partial results for Iraq's elections show PM Nouri Maliki's coalition ahead in seven provinces including Baghdad and Basra, apart from predominantly-Shiite provinces of Babel, Najaf , Wassit, Diwaniya and al-uthanna.

Former Prime Minister Iyad llawi's secular Iraqiya alliance is leading in five provinces that include Diyala, Salaheddin, Anbar, Ninawa and surprisingly Kirkuk, which was considered the stronghold of Kurdish parties.

A coalition of mostly Shia Muslim religious parties, the Iraqi National Alliance (INA) is showing a narrow lead in the southern provinces of Maysan, Diwaniya and Dhi Qar and running a close second in Baghdad behind State of Law. The Kurdistan Alliance (KA) of the two main Kurdish parties is ahead in the race in Arbil. Experts say that no single bloc is expected to get the majority of the votes to form a government.

Meanwhile Prime Minister Maliki has urged all parties to respect the results and avoid raising allegations of fraud without providing evidence.

Voice of Iraq news agency has reported that an official of Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) Abdulrahaman Khalifa has ruled out that rigging would occur in election results as a delay takes place in officially revealing the results.

IHEC has said that it will announce final results before the end of this month. More than 6,200 candidates from six major coalitions and other groups contested the parliamentary elections on March 7.
