Iraq has formally requested United States to launch airstrikes against militants advancing to the capital Baghdad

The move has come at a time when the militants shelled and seized the largest Iraqi oil refinery in Baiji and made gains in Baquba, around 60 kilometers from Baghdad.

Iraqi Prime Minister met Sunni and Kurdish leaders and called for national unity against terrorists.

Meanwhile, the fate of 40 Indian workers who were kidnapped in the Iraq city of Mosul is still unknown.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi last evening, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said, the wherabouts of the kidnapped Indian workers, are not known so far but most of the workers are from Punjab.

The Spokesperson said, the Indian Mission in Iraq has not received any call regarding ransom. He said, New Delhi is ready to work with any organisation or individual who is willing to assist in this difficult situation.

Meanwhile, the government has set up a round-the-clock control room to provide information to families of those Indians who were stranded in Iraq.

The Ministry said, that the government is monitoring the situation on an hourly basis and is in touch with the Iraqi government.
