Iraq could have a govt, finally

The prospects of a new Government in Iraq have brightened after Iraq’s main Shiite parliamentary bloc chose Nuri al-Maliki as its candidate for being Prime Minister for a second term. Iraqi National News Agency quoting coalition member Falah Fayadh disclosed the decision of the alliance, which clears the way for an end to the country's seven-month political deadlock. US State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said Iraqi political leaders are finally beginning to take steps to form a government. No political block could get majority to form the Government in Iraq as incumbent Prime Minister Maliki's State of Law Alliance finished second in the polls with 89 seats—two seats behind the Iraqiya bloc of ex-premier Iyad Allawi while Iraqi national alliance secured 70 seatrs. No party could get the 163 seats needed for a majority to form a Government on its own. Meanwhile, agency reports say that Iraq equaled the world record for the longest-period without a Government after elections with its 208-day impasse matching the time it took the Netherlands to name a prime minister after elections in 1977.
