Saudi Arabia has cast doubts on the usefulness of imposing more sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme. The Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal said the threat posed by Iran's nuclear ambitions requires a more immediate solution. He was speaking at a news conference in Riyadh with the American Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. He said the efforts made by the US to rid the Middle East of nuclear weapons also apply to Israel. Ms Hillary Clinton is in Saudi Arabia as part of her tour of the Gulf to try to build support for more sanctions against Iran.US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has urged the Iranian leadership to take back the authority from the Revolutionary Guard which they should be exercising on behalf of the people. She told this in a joint press conference with Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal in Riyadh on Monday evening. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal told on the occasion that sanctions are a long-term solution and suggested that we need an immediate resolution. Earlier, she held four hours of talks with King Abdullah in Riyadh, aiming to rally support for tough new UN sanctions against Iran. Arab News quoting diplomatic sources has reported that both leaders held wide-ranging talks and pledged to work in unison to restart the Middle East peace talks as early as possible. It added that during the talks, Ms. Clinton stressed the urgent need for exerting more pressure on Iran for tougher sanctions against Tehran. Earlier in Doha on Monday, Hillary Clinton said that Iran is heading towards a military dictatorship and warned it poses an international threat. Talking to students, she said that Iran's Revolutionary Guard, is in effect, supplanting the government. As part of US diplomatic efforts to engage various stakeholders in the region, several US officials are touring the Middle East. While Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is in Riyadh after concluding her visit to Doha, another US official Bill Burns is travelling to Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, and Azerbaijan from today to hold talks. US Deputy Treasury Secretary Neal Wolin is in UAE as part of his wider tour programme to Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
