Iran security forces clash with opposition protestors at a rally

In Iran, opposition protesters have clashed with government supporters at a mass rally in Tehran. A number of people were said to have been injured and others arrested. Reports from the Iranian capital said opposition supporters chanted slogans calling for the President to step down. There were also reports of some clashes with the security forces. Meanwhile, a reformist website reported that a group of hardliners physically assaulted former president Mohammad Khatami during the annual rally. Iranian authorities had earlier warned the opposition not to stage anti-government protests during Quds (Jerusalem) Day in support of Palestinians. The rallies are held nationwide every year on the last Friday of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
