Iran releases opposition leader Aminzadeh on bail

Iran has released on bail opposition leader and former deputy foreign minister Mohsen Aminzadeh who was jailed for taking part in anti-government activity. The ISNA news agency said Mr Aminzadeh was released on bail of 700,000 US dollars pending a possible appeal. He had been arrested after the disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in June 2009 and later sentenced to a six-year jail term by a Tehran revolutionary court. His lawyer Abbas Shiri said Mr Aminzadeh was accused of participating in gatherings that undermined national security, propaganda against the regime and interviews granted to foreign television stations. A supporter of main opposition leader and defeated presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi, he had served as deputy foreign minister in the government of reformist president Mohammad Khatami from 1997-2005.
