Iran, Pak to cooperate in telecom sector

Amid reports that US Congress has sent President Barack Obama a sweeping package of tough new energy and financial sanctions on Iran, Pakistan and Iran have shown interest in cooperation in telecom sector, weeks after signing Gas pipeline deal. According to Iran’s official news agency, IRNA, Pakistan Adviser to the Prime Minister on Information Technology, Sardar Muhammad Latif Khan Khosa has said that the a fibre optic line can be laid along with the gas pipeline for the connectivity between both the countries. He expressed these views while talking to Iranian Ambassador Mashallah Shakeri based in Pakistan, who called on him last evening and exchanged views on promoting cooperation in the sector of information technology and telecommunication between both countries. UN Security council has recently imposed fourth round of sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme and US and EU too have imposed additional bilateral sanctions on Iran. Yesterday, US Senate and House of Representatives approved the legislation. The new measures aimed to restrict Iran's access to imports of refined petroleum products like gasoline and jet fuel and curb its access to the international banking system. Earlier US envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke had issued a cautionary note to Pakistan not to over-commit to the Pipeline project and wait for the relevant US legislation to come through.
