News reports in Tehran say Iran's Islamic authorities have arrested at least 60 leaders of the country's Christian minority since Christmas, accusing them of spreading an extreme version of their faith. Iranian state television says those arrested are members of a movement that has been illegally promoting Christianity. The account said members of the group have been speaking out about their faith at cultural gatherings with Britain's backing, but gave no further details. State television gave no indication whether those arrested were Iranians or foreigners, but it said Tehran's governor of Tehran has promised that more Christians will be arrested soon. Iranian security services also rounded up and detained Christians during the Christmas period one year ago. Christianity is among Iran's recognized religions, along with the Jewish faith and Zoroastrianism. However, believers are forbidden to proselytize, and anyone who renounces Islam faces a death sentence.
