Iran has criticised the West for passing a resolution at the UN General Assembly's Third Committee accusing Tehran of Human Rights violations. According to Iranian channel Press TV, the Secretary General of Iran's High Council for Human Rights Mohammad Javad Larijani called the move illegal and discredited.Iranian reaction has come following the approval of a draft resolution by a key United Nations committee expressing deep concern at serious human rights violations in Iran, including torture, persecution of ethnic minorities and violence against women.According to minutes from the meeting released by the United Nations, the General Assembly's Third Committee, which handles humanitarian issues, passed the resolution 80-44 yesterday in New York, with 57 abstaining from the vote. The resolution could be adopted by the General Assembly next month.Canadian representative John McNee sponsored the measure, arguing that there has been a “very regrettable” deterioration in Iran's human rights situation in the past year.
