IPLbetting case: Inspector accused of taking bribe; probe ordered

Mumbai Police has ordered a probe into allegations that an Inspector accepted a bribe of crores of rupees to grant favours to the accused arrested in the last year's IPL betting case during their inquiry.Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sadanand Date said on Friday that Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Dhananjay Kulkarni will head the probe.Mr Date said, police will ask the writer of the report in which the allegations have been made to provide evidence or tell the source of information to substantiate his claims.He said, the next course of action would be decided depending upon the information that would emerge during the inquiry.A news report has claimed an Inspector of Crime Branch had accepted crores of rupees for extending favours to the arrested accused.The officer was also accused of not questioning some bookies who were under the scanner and taking money in lieu of this. Mumbai Police cracked down on a betting syndicate in May last year and made high profile arrests.They filed a chargesheet against nearly two dozen persons four months later.
