IPL controversy rocks Houses; Opposition demands JPC probe

The opposition today demanded resignation of Union Ministers Sharad Pawar and Praful Patel for their alleged involvement in the IPL scam. Talking to reporters outside Parliament, the BJP leader Yashwant Sinha said that an impartial inquiry is not possible unless the Ministers under cloud resign.<br/><br/>On opposition demand, NCP chief Sharad Pawar says he is not worried as he has nothing to do with IPL. Speaking in New Delhi today he said he is also unperturbed by Opposition parties demand for Joint Parliamentary Committee probe.<br/><br/>Evading a direct reply on whether the BJP is seeking removal of Ministers allegedly involved in IPL controversy, party spokesman S S Ahluwalia said that the party has not taken a final view on the issue. He however added he does not disagree with senior leader Mr Yashwant Sinha. He reiterated opposition's demand for a Joint Parliamentary.<br/><br/>The Janta Dal (United) leader Shivanand Tiwari also demanded resignation of Sharad Pawar and Praful Patel for their alleged involvement in the scam.<br/><br/>CPIM leader Sitaram Yechury said that the entire opposition is united in its demand for a JPC probe in the alleged scam.<br/>CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta said opposition members are meeting the Prime Minister and the President next week to press for their demand.<br/><br/>The alleged reports of corruption in IPL rocked both Houses of Parliament with opposition seeking a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the controversy. While the Lok Sabha witnessed two adjournments till 2 PM on the issue, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day after it met on the second adjournment at 2.30 P.M.<br/><br/>In the Lok Sabha, the trouble started as the house met in the morning the entire opposition was seeking suspension of the question hour to take up the issue for discussion. Leader of the Opposition, Mrs. Sushma Swaraj, while making a forceful plea for setting up of the JPC, alleged that there is a question mark over the involvement of two central ministers and skeletons are coming out of cup board daily regarding the scam. Mr Sharad Yadav of the JD-U, while supporting her demand, said the IPL has become a platform for loot and betting. Mr Basudeb Acharya of the CPIM said that startling revelations are pouring in every day and a large number of people are involved in what he described as the biggest gambling in the country. He said there is an urgent need to fix those responsible for the scam. Mr Gurudas Dasgupta of the CPI described the scam as unparallel in the history of Independent India.<br/><br/>Responding to the opposition demand, the Leader of the House and Finance Minister, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee said the decision on setting up of the JPC cannot be taken instantly and the matter requires due diligence. However, the opposition was not satisfied and continued to raise slogans in support of its demand forcing the Speaker, Mrs Meira Kumar to adjourn the house twice.<br/><br/> <br/><br/>In the Rajya Sabha, the scene was no different. After the question hour, entire opposition was up on its feet demanding a JPC probe. Some of the members trooped into the well of the house and raised slogans forcing the Presiding Officer to adjourn the house, first till 2.30PM and later for the day.<br/><br/>Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has accused IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi of having acted as an extra-constitutional power during Vasundhara Raje's rule. Mr. Gehlot claimed that Modi used to pressurise officers for favours due to his proximity to the BJP leader.<br/><br/>On the other hand, Mrs. Raje said that Mr. Gehlot is trying to divert attention from problems of the state by these allegations.<br/><br/>BCCI Vice President Rajiv Shukla today met Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on the ongoing IPL controversy. Mr Shukla, a Congress MP, briefed him on the latest developments. <br/><br/>Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray today accused Union Minister and former BCCI chief Sharad Pawar for the IPL mess. Talking to reporters in Mumbai, he said, Mr Pawar has helmed the BCCI, the parent body of IPL for years and now he cannot claim that he is no way connected to the Indian Premier League.
