IOR-ARC for further cooperation to ensure sustained growth, balanced economic development

The Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IOR-ARC) today resolved to further deepen cooperation among the member countries to ensure sustained growth and balanced economic development of the region. The grouping reaffirmed to ensure freedom of navigation and strengthen security of sea lanes in the Indian Ocean. Speaking at the conclusion of the 12th IORARC meet in Gurgaon today, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said, the United States has been included as the 6th Dialogue partner of the grouping consisting of Indian ocean rim countries. India also the outgoing Chair would hand over the Group Chair position to Australia, which hosts the 13th council of meeting next year.

Briefing newsmen after the Conference, Mr. Khurshid said, India is committed to playing a responsible role to enhance regional cooperation and also its part internationally as well. He said, the United States has a greater governance responsibility in global affairs and America's inclusion as a dialogue partner in the grouping will add to the influence of the group. Minister said, the evolving strategies and alignments cannot be ignored and sea lanes are critical for economic and energy security.

AIR Correspondent adds that the IOCARC grouping was set up in 1997, the grouping presently has 20 member countries and six dialogue partners.
