IOM begins mass evacuation of migrant workers from Libya

The International Organisation for Migration has begun mass evacuation of the thousands of migrant workers who are fleeing Libya following the unrest and turmoil in the country. According to the agency, more than 100,000 migrants from many nationalities have escaped into Tunisia and Egypt, with a growing number now stranded at Libya's borders with Egypt and Tunisia. The agency has begun evacuating the migrants by both sea and air routes. IOM Director General William Lacy Swing has appealed to its donors to provide funds worth eleven million US Dollars to support the work to provide relief for the migrant workers. All India Radio Dhaka correspondent reports that Bangladesh has more than fifty thousand migrant workers in Libya and the agency is working with the Bangladesh ministry of Foreign Affairs to move them to safer places. The agency has arranged for special flights today which will transport more than 750 Bangladeshi migrant workers to Dhaka within the next twenty four hours. Apart from this the IOM is also working with the Bangladeshi Ministry of Foreign Affairs to prepare for the arrival of a group of some 2,000 workers who remain stranded on the Libyan side of the border. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed the Foreign Ministry to take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of the country’s migrant workers.Earlier on Friday, nearly 100 Bangladesh workers returned to Dhaka with the help of the organizations they worked for in Libya.
