IOC drops Wrestling from 2020 Olympics;Olympian Sushil fears halt to rising profile of game in country

The International Olympic Committee's Executive Board has recommended that Wrestling should be removed from the 2020 Olympic Games. The IOC Board has made the recommendation as it looks to revamp the Games sports programme. However, the IOC session in Buenos Aires in September will still need to ratify the decision.Wrestling, contested in the first modern Olympics in 1896, will join a list of seven other candidate sports battling for one spot on the programme. Indian wrestling fraternity has expressed shock and surprise at the IOC's move to drop the sport from the 2020 Olympic programme. The London medalwinners fear the decision could halt the rising profile ofthe game in the country.Sushil Kumar, who won a silver in London Olympics in 66 kg freestyle event, told PTI that he does not see any reason why IOC decided to drop wrestling from the 2020 Olympic programme. Sushil said the sport has a huge popularity across the globe. Asked if he feels that wrestling can come back when the IOC votes on the inclusion of a sport in its Executive Board meeting later in the year, he said, he is confidentthat wrestling will remain part of the Olympic Games.Sushil's childhood friend and London Olympics bronze medallist, Yogeshwar Dutt said the decision would be a "big setback" for the upcoming crop of wrestlers.
