IOA refuses to accept proposed sports bill in its present form

Indian Olymic Association today refused to accept the proposed sports bill in its present form. Strongly speaking in favour of the autonomy of sports association, its acting Chairman V.K.Malhotra accused the government of trying to control the sports body completely. Briefing reporters after a marathon meeting of the association in New Delhi today, Mr. Malhotra said that all 26 national sports federations participated in the meeting. He said that the association has already accepted the principles of transparency, fair elections, and CAG auditing. Mr. Malhotra added that the number of players in the management has to be as per the international guidelines. He said that they planned to meet the Prime Minister to discuss the issue. AIR correspondent adds that the sports minister last month said that it will go ahead with the draft sports bill which puts a limit on the age and tenure of national sports federation heads. Mr. Ajay Makan has made it clear that the government has taken into account IOC's objections to the age and tenure limitation guidelines but the proposed legislation will be tabled in the monsoon session of parliament.
