Involve youth: Prez to shipping industry

The President has called upon the Shipping industry to attract the youth and to invest in their training. Addressing the Golden Jubilee celebration of the Shipping corporation of India (SCI), Patil said 54 crore youth in the country are looking for opportunities to work. She said a maritime career can be a very promising option for them. Patil observed India could become the hub for manpower development for the maritime nations of the developing world. The President further noted that in the current global climate, the challenge for the maritime community is also to ensure security. Emphasising the need for greater vigilance towards the security of personnel and cargo, she said that the Shipping industry should evolve a security drill for merchant ships. She said that there should also be greater attention to improve safety standard, to prevent accidents and the devastating effect on the ecology, which has an adverse impact on the image of the industry. Speaking on the occasion the Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said that around 90 per cent of India's overseas state in terms of volume and 70 per cent by value are seaborne. He said that shipping industry should try to regain its lost primacy over the sea. Petroleum Minister Murli Deora said shipping industry is mainly responsible for the carrage of oil, gas and coal for meeting country's energy requirement. He said that the shipping industry will need to play a pivotal role in achieving this mission.
