Home Minister P Chidambaram said that investigations into the cash for votes issue regarding July 2008 Trust Vote will be completed shortly. He said that Crime Branch of Delhi Police is seized of the matter and the fresh allegations regarding the role of a political party will also be looked into to take it to its logical conclusion. He was replying to a debate on a short duration discussion arising out of the Prime Minister's statement in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. Chidambaram told the house that forensic report on the veracity of sting operation tapes by a TV Channel is also being examined by the police. He alleged that there was no independent journalistic exercise in the form of sting operation but there was a deliberate attempt to destabilise a sitting government by the BJP. He said the opposition party made desperate efforts to convert the majority enjoyed by UPA into a minority one. The Home Minister said that the UPA always enjoyed the trust of the Lok Sabha and the trust of the people in the subsequent general elections and it will continue to serve the people of the country. The Home Minister said that the Parliamentary Panel that probed the cash for votes issue unanimously recommended the need for further investigation by an appropriate agency. Earlier, initiating the debate the Leader of Opposition Arun Jaitley charged the government with making attempts to cover up the issue. He said this is an issue of political corruption, which can neither be under-estimated nor under-stated. He said 22nd of July in 2008 was a sad day because attempts were made to bribe the MPs to win the trust vote.
