The Australian High Commissioner Mr Peter Verghese has said that investigation into the fatal stabbing of the Indian student Nitin Garg is high priority case for Victorian Police. He said that probe is already on and he is hopeful that facts about the case will emerge soon. Mr Verghese met the External Affairs Minister Mr S M Krishna today in the backdrop of attacks on Indians in Australia. Mr Verghese , however, described his meeting with Mr Krishna as a private one.

Mr Verghese had on Wednesday admitted that there was an increase of attacks on Indians in Australia but said that most attacks were opportunisitic in nature and that a very small minority had a racist tinge to them . He had also said that the Australian government was doing all it could do to provide security and safety to Indian students.

In reply to a question on the decline in the number of Indian students seeking admission in Australian Educational Institutions , Mr Verghese said the drop is not entirely due to the violent incidents but also because of the impact of global melt down.
