Investigation into Nitin Garg case high priority for Victorian Police: Verghese

India has called for urgent action by the Australian government to apprehend the culprits responsible for the recent attacks on Indians and bring them to justice. An Indian student, Nitin Garg was fatally stabbed to death in Melbourne and the half burnt body of Ranjodh Singh was also found in New South Wales The Indian High Commissioner and Consul General in Melbourne, met the acting Premier of Victoria, Rob Hulls to impress upon them the need for taking such an action. The External Affairs Ministry said that the government of Victoria assured them that it was making all efforts in this regard. An official release said that every possible assistance is being provided by the High Commission and the Consulate General for early depatch of the bodies of those killed to their families in India. It said, necessary financial assistance will also be provided by the Indian government for the purpose.<br/><br/>New Delhi has also expressed the hope that Canberra will further strenghen the steps to ensure the safety and security of the Indian community in Australia. It has also formally asked the Australian government to give the complete statistics and break up of the number of attacks on Indians. The External Affairs Ministry has also stressed the need for calm and balance with regard to the reporting of incidents of attacks on Indian students in Australia. <br/><br/>The Australian High Commissioner Mr Peter Verghese has said that investigation into the fatal stabbing of the Indian student Nitin Garg is high priority case for Victorian Police .He said that probe is already on and he is hopeful that facts about the case will emerge soon . Mr Verghese met the External Affairs Minister Mr S M Krishna today in the backdrop of attacks on Indians in Australia. Mr Verghese, however described his meeting with Mr Krishna as a private one.
