Introduction of FDI in railways draws criticism from pol parties

Criticising the Railway Budget presented today, the CPI(M) today said that the Centre was trying to sell off the Railways to the corporates and foreign powers in the name of introduction of FDI.CPI(M) leader Surya Kanta Mishra said that the Budget shows that the government is trying to sell off the Railways to foreign powers and corporates. He said that the common people will face the heat. Mishra also attacked the Centre for not giving any new train or project to west Bengal.The Nationalist Congress Party has accused the BJP-led NDA government of planning to privatise railways and ignoring Mumbai in its maiden Rail Budget presented today.NCP spokesman Nawab Malik said in Mumbai that the Narendra Modi government is planning to privatiseRailways as there was repeated mention of foreign direct investment, public sector units, public private partnership in the budget. He also said that the Railway Minister spoke of closure of Railway recruitment and outsourcing.He said nothing concrete was given to Mumbai where as many as 85 lakh people commute daily in the suburban trains. Out of 2.20 crore railway commuters in the country, 85 lakh are from Mumbai alone, Malik said.Meanwhile, senior NCP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said that the budget was silent on various problems being encountered by the railway commuters in Mumbai.Aam Aadmi Party today termed the Rail Budget as a missed opportunity. In a statement, the party said that the Budget appears to be silent on addressing these long term concerns and belies expectations of a long term vision.The party also added that there was nothing concrete in the Budget on the improvement of safety and maintenance of the massive railway network across the country.
