Interpol demands China 'clarification' on missing police

<span style="color: #222222;">The International Criminal Political Investigation (Interpol) has officially asked China for information regarding the disappearance of the agency's President Meng Hongwei on a trip to China.</span><br />'' <br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">However, the Chinese government has not said anything publicly yet about Meng's disappearance. His disappearance was made public on Saturday, when French authorities said they were opening an investigation to find out what happened to Meng, a Chinese national who served a lengthy term as the vice minister for public security.</span><br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">Interpol said in a tweet that the case was "a matter for the relevant authorities in both France and China".</span><br />'' <br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">Meng's disappearance was originally reported by his wife, who told French police in the city of Lyon she had not heard from him since he travelled to China.</span><br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">Meng was last seen in Lyon, Interpol's home base, late September.</span><br />'' <br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">It is the latest high-profile disappearance in China, where a number of top government officials, billionaire business magnates and even an A-list celebrity have vanished for weeks or months at a time.</span><br />'' <br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">The Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not respond to a request for comment from AFP.</span><br />'' <br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">Critics of Meng's 2016 election to Interpol's presidency said he would use the position to help China target dissidents abroad under the guise of pursuing corrupt officials.</span><br />
