International Youth Volunteerism Day being observed today

The 11th International Youth Volunteerism Day is being observed today. This is to have a better appreciation of the power of volunteerism. A decision to observe the day was taken by the United Nations after approving a proposal by the government of Japan in 2001. A report released in New Delhi today says that Panchayats can prove an important tool of transformation in India .

Report says that Volunteerism contributes to laying a sound basis for citizen’s participation in governance. It also makes the youth, part of the decision making process that have impact on one’s community.

Speaking about the importance of Volunteerism, the member, Planning Commission, Hamida Sayeed called for strengthening the campaign of Volunteerism. This, she said will ensure better implementation of government schemes and also pave the way for innovation in different schemes at grassroot level.

The report also mentioned important contribution by Volunteer organizations. Citing the example of Chipko movement to save trees in the country, it hailed the efforts by some corporate houses also in the development of the country.

AIR Correspondent reports that Sweden earmarks more than five per cent of its GDP share to promote this initiative for better implementation of schemes and programmes whereas India ‘s share is around one per cent.
