International Women's Day observed today

International Women’s Day was observed today. Several programmes were organised across the country to create public awareness about the issues related to women.

The Presiding Officers of both the Houses of Parliament asked the members to rededicate collectively towards making the cherished goal of women empowerment a living reality.

Rajya Sabha Chairman Mohammed Hamid Ansari suspended the question hour by allowing some of the women members to speak on the occasion.

He said though women have made remarkable progress in economic, political and social spheres, gender equality remains a distant dream.

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar called upon the members to work towards creating equal and humane environment for women.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj asked for dedicating this year to women’s safety and transforming the mindset of people.

Echoing a similar view, Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath said the government and the society should work together for the welfare of women.

Addressing a function in Haryana, Congress President Sonia Gandhi exhorted women not to bow down to difficulties in future and face them with courage as the country needs them at all responsible positions.

Greater emphasis on women empowerment and governance based on principles of gender equality and consistent rule of law to ensure safety, dignity and security to women has become more significant in view of the recent shocking incidents in the country.
