International Roma Conference to begin in New Delhi tomorrow

International Roma Conference will begin in New Delhi tomorrow. Briefing media in New Delhi, Director General of Indian Council for Cultural Relations, C Rajasekhar said, 45 delegates from 15 countries will attend the three-day conference. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will inaugurate the event. <br/><br/>A 20-million strong Roma community is spread across more than 30 countries in West Asia, Europe, America and Australia. There is compelling evidence that their westward migration from India happened from 5th century onwards. Some scholars are of the opinion that the first migration took place when Indian iron smiths accompanied Alexander who was returning from India. <br/><br/>The iron smiths were highly skilled in making weapons. Many Roma scholars, anthropologists and historians researching their origins have traced their roots to India. The first Roma conference was organised in 1976 in Chandigarh.
