International Rhododendron Festival 2010 begins in Sikkim

The International Rhododendron Festival 2010 began in Sikkim on Sunday.The West Bengal Governor Mr. MK Narayanan, also holding the additional charge of the Sikkim Governor, inaugurated it, at the picturesque Singba Rhododendron Sanctuary in the high altitude North Sikkim district. AIR correspondent reports, the event is the first of its kind in the entire Himalayas. <br/> <br/>It is quite interesting to note that the Rhododendrons , which usually bloom in the second week of May in Sikkim , are in full bloom in the month of April itself. Hence, it is not advisable to the nature lovers to miss such a riot of colours in such an exceptionally blooming season .Eco-friendly camps have been put up at Phuni, Shingba and Yumthang Valley from today till 15th of the next month at a very reasonable cost for the visiting tourists.<br/> <br/>Besides the Singba Rhododendron Sanctuary, some more areas of natural habitat of Rhododendrons like Lachen, Zema, Thangu and Tholung Kesongla in North districrt, Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary in East and Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary in West district will be the other major destinations under this Festival.<br/> <br/>The year long event, which will come to a close in April next year , is slated to offer a unique eco-tourism package, highlighting the cultural heritage of Sikkim and offering a ‘close to nature’ experience to the visitors as well.<br/>
