International Literacy Day today

The UN Secretary General has called on International community and polity to make literacy accessible to every woman. In his message on the International Literacy Day today, Mr. Ban Ki moon said that all evidence shows that investment in literacy for women yields high development dividends and empowering women through literacy empowers all. The goal is to reduce by half the number of illiterates by 2015. AIR correspondent says that the Prime Minister had launched Saakshar Bharat Mission last year specially to give boost to female literacy which is much less compared to their male counterparts.Union Minister of State for Human Resources Development D. Prandheswari has said that the government aims at enhancing literacy rate among adults in the country from existing 16% to 80% by 2015 and enrolment ratio in higher educational institutions from 12.4% to 30% by 2020. Participating in the International Literacy Day celebrations in Hyderabad, the Minister said that the government is committed to enhance literacy rate in the country particularly among women as it is key to sustain economic growth and knowledge based society.
