International Day of Tolerance being observed today

Today is International Day of Tolerance. The day is observed on 16th November every year to appreciate the rich variety of world's cultures, forms of expression and ways of being human. Tolerance recognises the universal human rights and fundamental freedoms of others.<br/><br/>In her message, Director General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova said tolerance is a pre-requisite for peace in a world of diversity. She called upon all UNESCO member states and the world to take up the message of tolerance and together build societies that are more inclusive, more peaceful and more prosperous.

International Day of Tolerance being observed today

The International Day of Tolerance is being observed today. In his message, the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki- moon said, tolerance is much more than passively accepting the other. He said, it brings obligations to act and must be taught, nurtured and defended. He said, tolerance requires investment by States in people, and in the fulfilment of their potential through education, inclusion and opportunities. <br/><br/>He said, tolerance means building societies founded on respect for human rights, where fear, distrust and marginalization are supplanted by pluralism, participation and respect for differences. On the occasion, Mr Ban Ki-moon appealed to the world community to recognize the mounting threat posed by those who strive to divide and take pledge to forge a path defined by dialogue, social cohesion and mutual understanding.
