The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is being observed throughout the world today. This day is observed on the 26th of June every year to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse. Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Mukul Wasnik has said that the government will soon come up with a National Policy on Prevention of Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. In an interview to All India Radio, he said that the draft policy on drug abuse is already in the process of discussion.Mr Wasnik said, the problem of drug abuse has assumed serious proportions, especially amongst the youth of the country and the government is trying to deal with it seriously. In a message on the occasion, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that unless we reduce demand for illicit drugs, we can never fully tackle cultivation, production or trafficking. He said, governments have a responsibility to counteract both drug trafficking and drug abuse, but communities can also make a major contribution. Mr Ban said, families, schools, civil society and religious organizations can do their part to rid their communities of drugs.
