International Conference on biodiversity in Japan

India is expected to play a leading role at the world's biggest international conference on biodiversity in Nagoya, Japan starting on Tuesday. The conference will finalise a Protocol on access to local biological resources and sharing the benefits from it with local communities. The Environment Minister Mr Jairam will attend the conference from 23rd to 25th India and Brazil will pitch for the inclusion of human pathogens in the agreement as companies from developed take pathogen from developing nations , make drugs and developing countries pay billions of dollars to buy the drugs fromthem. He said the inclusion of pathogens in the protocol on access and benefits will benefit those communities from whom the pathogens or disease-causing organisms are sourced . The second contentious issue is that developed countries prefer to limit any deal to include only the original resources, while developing countries want the final products also to be included in the agreement .Mr Ramesh said that the although United States is the biggest user of bio resources from developing countries it is not a party to the convention Biological Diversity (CBD) and the big challenge is to get the US on board. India which accounts for 7 to 8 per cent of the worlds recorded plants and animal species has been a victim of bio piracy for long and though India is not in favour of banning the use bio resources it wants the access to be regulated and benefits to be shared with local communities . The Traditional Knowledge Digital Library which has come out with about 420 knowledge registers with more two lakh formulationis proving to be an effective deterrent against biopiracy.India has identified nearly 600 pending applications for patents on Indian system of medicines , 400 of them in US alone. India has set up a global bio piracy watch system under the Traditional Knowledge Digital Liberary with regard to application for patents related to Indiansystem of medicine. The Liberary which has come out with about 420 knowledge registers with more two lakh formulation is proving to be an effective deterrent against bio piracy. India also has a domestic law on access and benefit sharing and an agreement with 80 private companies has been reached . Under it PepsiCo has paid a royalty of 37 lakh rupees for acquiring sea weed used by the multinational firm inits food supplement and energy drink and it is being distributed among 1,000 fishermen families from 10 local communities in Tamil Nadul
