International biodiversity conference approves 30 decisions concerning biodiversity conservation

The International Biodiversity Conference, CoP11 has approved only 30 decisions and kept the key decisions relating to Resource Mobilization pending during its plenary session on Friday evening in Hyderabad. The plenary session has been adjourned for two hours after it approves 30 decisions pertaining to various aspects of Biodiversity conservation. The efforts are still underway to bring the member countries to a broad consensus over fund mobilization for achieving global biodiversity targets.

The Plenary has kept four key decisions pending relating to Resource Mobilization, Budget for Convention on Biodiversity, Capacity Building support and overall CoP11 report.

Union Environment and Forests Minister, Jayanthi Natarajan has chaired the plenary session in which representatives from 184 member countries present. With the consensus eluding over Fund Mobilization even by the time of scheduled closure of the CoP11, the plenary session has approved only 30 out of 34 decisions such as strengthening conservation activities of marine and coastal biodiversity, protecting the inland water ecosystems, conserving protected areas, role of indigenous and local communities, recognizing link between business and biodiversity and implementation of Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit sharing.

It has been decided to convene the next meeting in Republic of Korea and hold the first meeting of parties to Nagoya Protocol in Korea. As proposed by the European Union, the plenary thanked India and Andhra Pradesh Government for convening the CoP11.
