INS Shardul leaves for Colombo port, scheduled to arrive tomorrow

The second ship, INS Shardul, has left Kochi and is scheduled to arrive at Colombo Port by mid-day tomorrow. The ship is carrying additional relief material requested by Sri Lankan authorities including more inflatable boats.<br/><br/>Sources in the External Affairs Ministry said, another ship INS Jalashwa has also set sail from Visakhapatnam to join the relief efforts. It is expected to reach Colombo within two days. INS Jalsahwa is an even larger LPD (landing platform / dock) class of ship, which can carry large amounts of relief material and is ideally suited to conduct humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions.<br/><br/>The first ship INS Kirch carrying relief material reached Colombo port this morning. The Indian rescue personnel are being deployed to the disaster affected zone in coordination with Sri Lankan Navy and other authorities.<br/><br/>India received a request from Sri Lanka yesterday afternoon to provide assistance following flooding and landslides in various parts of the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi immediately directed provision of all necessary assistance to calamity ridden country. He also condoled the loss of lives and property in the natural disaster.<br/><br/>Indian High Commission in Colombo is in close touch with Sri Lankan authorities to coordinate any additional assistance that they may require.
