INS Betwa slips at Naval dockyard

INS Betwa, a Brahmaputra-class guided missile frigate tipped over at Mumbai's Naval Dockyard this afternoon. According to Navy Spokesperson Capt D K Sharma, the incident occurred during undocking when the ship's mast hit the dockyard ground. He informed that 14 naval personnel were rescued from the dock while two are still missing. <br/><br/>Capt Sharma added that divers have been deployed to search for the missing jawans.<br/><br/>INS Betwa is 3850-tonne ship, having a length of 126 metres. It was commissioned in 2004. The extent of the damage suffered by INS Betwa is still being assessed.<br/><br/>This is the second major incident involving INS Betwa. In 2014, the ship had collided with an unidentified object while approaching the Mumbai naval base. A spate of accidents had occurred in that period with INS Sindhuratna had reported a fire onboard while the explosion had occurred onboard submarine 'INS Sindhurakshak' in 2013.

Navy has said that INS Betwa undergoing refit at Naval dockyard in Mumbai slipped on dock blocks and the extent of damage is being assessed. <br/><br/>Speaking to media in New Delhi, Navy PRO D K Sharma said, 14 personnel rescued from the dock with minor injuries and all are stable. He said, divers deployed to look for two missing crew members. <br/><br/>INS Betwa is a 4000 tonne frigate of the Brahmaputra class built by Garden Reach Ship Builders of Kolkata and entered service in July 2004. <br/><br/>Our correspondent reports, the Navy has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
