At the time when the government is serious about enhanced expenditure on infrastructure projects, a Ministry of Statistics and Programme implemetation report has said that at least half of the 950 infrastructure projects in the country are delayed. An appraisal report by the ministry has also said that these projects can lead to a cost overrun of more than Rs. 40,000 crore. Many of these projects are pending due to various reasons including land acquisition, pending environmental clearance and in some cases cancellation of the contract itself.The states with highest number of delayed projects are Maharashtra, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Bihar..
