Inflation declines to 32 month low of 6.87% in July

Inflation in July moderated to 6.87 per cent –the lowest since November 2009– helped by a decline in vegetable prices. But food inflation stayed in double digits, and manufactured items remained under price pressure. Inflation, as measured by the Wholesale Price Index, had stood at 7.25 percent in June this year, and 9.36 per cent in July last year. Inflation for vegetables eased to 24 per cent in July, from 49 per cent in the June. Food inflation stood at 10.06 per cent in July, easing from June's 10.81 per cent, as per official data released today. Manufacturing, or core inflation rose to 5.58 per cent in July, from 5 per cent in June.Commenting on inflation numbers, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said the dip iswelcome, but inflation is still above the comfort level.
