Industries may require continue stimulus: Anand

Expressing concern over Labour Intensive Industries slow recovery in exports due to contraction in global markets, Union Industry and Commerce Minister Mr Anand Sharma has said these industries may require continued stimulus to tide over the crisis. <br/><br/>Speaking to newsmen in Chennai today, he said exports of engineering goods, garments, leather products and handicrafts are yet to see positive growth and he had raised the issue of continued stimulus for these sectors with the finance minister.<br/><br/>Stating some of the industries have benefited due to the stimulus package and various policy intervention, Mr Anand Sharma advocated a cautious and calibrated approach in phasing out stimulus package for these sectors. He said industrial production has also shown strong recovery in the last few months. Taking a strong stand against FDI in tobacco industry, the industries said that India does not need any investment into this industry and said the centre had banned smoking in public places.<br/><br/>On Bharti Airtel attempt to acquire most of the African operations of Kuwait’s Zain telecom, Mr Anand Sharma said Government will welcome Indian corporates bid to step out to become multinational and will support it wholeheartedly.<br/><br/>Earlier, Inaugurating the India International Sea food Exhibition, the Industries minister said his ministry would support the demand of the fisheries sector to treat it on par with the agriculture, so as to get same incentives and concessions given by the government. Mr Anand Sharma also gave away the marine products exports development authority’s award s for outstanding export performance.<br/><br/>The Union Minister of State Mr K.V.Thomas and Tamil Nadu Fisheries Minister Mr K.P.P.Samy were among those who addressed the conference.
