‘Indo-US Strategic Dialogue begins

The External Affairs Minister Mr. S.M. Krishna and his US counterpart Hillary Clinton are now holding discussions on whole gamut of bilateral relations in the second round of strategic dialogue in New Delhi. Ms. Clinton reached the national capital last evening for the talks. Strengthening cooperation in counter terrorism, strategic partnership, energy and climate change among other issues will be the focus of discussions. Cooperation in education, science and technology, health and defence are also likely to figure prominently in the talks apart from situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Indo-US civil nuclear cooperation will also be part of the strategic dialogue during which India is expected to talk about American visa regime which is impacting on the movement of Indian IT professionals to that country. The US Secretary of State is accompanied by 25-member delegation including top security officials. The External Affairs Minister S M Krishna is assisted in the talks by Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahulawalia and Advisor to the Prime Minister Sam Pitroda among others. Apart from calling on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh , Clinton will hold parleys with several senior political leaders including UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi. She had a breakfast meeting with the National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon. AIR correspondent reports that the meeting coming less than a week after the Mumbai terror blasts, discussions on security challenges in the region are expected to be high on the agenda. Ahead of the delegation level talks in the dialogue India and US signed aviation safety agreement last evening and decided to step up scientific cooperation in agriculture, healthcare, nutrition and Monsoon forecasting. On Tuesday Ms. Clinton will be travelling to Chennai where she is likely to meet representatives of US companies.
