Indo-Pak foreign secretary meeting lays 'solid foundation', says S. M Krishna

The External Affairs Minister Mr. S. M Krishna said, the meeting between India and Pakistan Foreign Secretaries indicates that a solid foundation has been laid for a sustained engagement. He was speaking to media on his arrival in Thimphu. Mr. Krishna said, the meeting was in keeping with the understanding reached with Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi in Islamabad. He said the genesis of all this was in mandate given by the Prime Ministers of the two countries when they met in Thimphu last year. He said, the aim of all these meetings is only to build bridges of trust and mutual confidence. Earlier, the Foreign Secretaries of India and Pakistan described their last night talks as useful and productive with both sides adopting an open and constructive attitude. The Foreign Secretary Mrs Nirupama Rao told the media in Thimphu that the two sides were able to discuss a number of relevant issues as last night's talks were not dominated by one issue. She said that the two sides talked about the process and to chart the way forward. Without elaborating, Mrs Rao said that there is a need to wait for this process to mature and one should be cautiously optimistic. Mrs Rao said that there is a need to be realistic and be aware of the realities, besides having a vision for the future she said, there are many issues that need to be resolved between the two countries as the nature of the relationship has been very complex. On the other hand, Pakistan Foreign Scretary Salman Bashir has said that the two sides have been able to make efforts to a considerable extent in bridging the trust deficit. Speaking to reporters, he said, there has been forward movement on the things agreed to by the Prime Ministers of the two countries in Thimphu in April last year. These included efforts to bridge the trust deficit, have frequent contacts and that everything should be discussed .He said that the two countries are pursuing that format. While strongly condemning terrorism, Mr Bashir said that the two sides have agreed to cooperate to deal with this menace. He said that there is belief that there is a large area of convergence in this regard and the need to work where ever there are divergences.
