Indo-Nepal meeting on water sharing underway

The Indo-Nepal Secretary level meeting on sharing water resources began in Pokhara this afternoon.<br/>Addressing the meeting, Secretary, Water Resources Ministry Mr. U.N.Panjiar who is leading the Indian delegation, reiterated India’s commitment for providing all assistance and cooperation to Nepal in the field of water resources.<br/>Mr. Panjiar said during his visit to India in August this year, Nepal’s Prime Minister has sought India’s active participation in Nepal government’s plan to generate 25000 megawatt of hydro electricity in the next 20 years. He said both the countries have agreed to facilitate increased public and private participation in harnessing hydro power in Nepal.<br/>He said Joint Ministerial level commission on water resources and joint committee on water resources will expedite the finalization of the terms of reference of the Pancheshwar development authority and the detailed project report of the Pancheshwor project.<br/>Speaking on the occasion, the leader of the Nepali delegation and Energy Secretary Shankar Prasad Koirala expressed his gratitude to the government of India in its cooperation in water and power sector.He said Indo Nepal cooperation in water sector can bring about tremendous benefit to the people of both the countries.<br/>AIR correspondent C.K. Dorjee reports from Kathmandu that the joint secretary level meeting is expected to set the agenda and finalize the date of the joint ministerial level meeting of the two countries on water resources.<br/>The Secretary level meeting on water resources is expected to finalize the terms of reference of the Pancheshwor Development Authority PDA). Once established, the PDA will expedite the preparation and finalization of the detailed project report and initiate the preparation of the 64000MW multi purpose Pancheshwor Hydro Power Project. The meeting is also likely to discus the Saptakoshi high dam, power trade between the two countries and other water related issues.<br/>
