Indo-Japan agreement to intensify civil nuclear cooperation on the cards

India and Japan have decided to intensify civil nuclear cooperation to conclude an agreement for peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Addressing a joint press conference after the fourth round of Indo-Japan strategic dialogue in New Delhi today along with the Japanese Foreign Minister, Katsuya Okada, External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna said no time line has been fixed for the conclusion of the agreement. He said that the two leaders had wide ranging discussion on economic partnership, peaceful uses of nuclear energy and the reforms in the UN Security Council. Supporting Krishna, the Japanese Foreign Minister said that it was a very tough decision for Tokyo to start discussion on peaceful uses of nuclear energy with India which is not a signatory to the NPT. He expressed confidence that a comprehensive economic partnership agreement will be reached during the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's visit to Japan in October this year. Katsuya Okada said, during his meeting Dr. Manmohan Singh, he discussed in detail to expand and widen the relationship between New Delhi and Tokyo.
