A two day meeting of the India-Bangladesh Joint working group on trade began in Dhaka today. The Indian Delegation is led by Mr. Arvind Mehta, Joint Secretary Ministry of Commerce while the Bangladesh Delegation is led by Mr. Ruhal Amin Sarkar. The meeting is expected to review the progress made on the various trade related issues agreed to in the Joint Communique issued during the visit of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to New Delhi in January this year.During the visit, the Prime Ministers of both the countries agreed to address the issue of removal of tariff and non-tariff barriers and port restrictions and facilitate movement of containerized cargo by rail and water. India also agreed to support the up gradation of the Bangladesh Standard Testing Institute with a view to building capacity on certification.The two leaders also agreed to operationalize the land customs stations at Sabroom-Ramgarh and Demagiri-Thegamukh by putting in place necessary infrastructure and issuing necessary notifications. Both the countries also agreed to set up border haats on a pilot basis at selected areas, including on the Meghalaya border, to allow trade in specified products agreed and notified by both Governments.
