Urban population in India will be more than double to over 600 million by 2035 as increasing number of people migrate to cities for better amenities. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said in New Delhi on Friday that this is due to better employment opportunities. Addressing the 10th National Convention of Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Associations of India, he said with sustained high economic growth, the pace of urbanisation is set to accelerate. Mukherjee said providing housing facilities to people in urban areas is becoming a big challenge. Currently, nearly 300 million people live in urban areas in India, which is almost equal to the population of the United States and larger than the population of many countries put together.
