India’s stand on NPT wont affect nuke deal: US

The United States has said India's position on non-proliferation and CTBT will not impact the nuclear deal between the two countries and expressed hope to move forward with the landmark agreement. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Robert Blake was briefing journalists after a bilateral meeting between Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and External Affairs Minister S M Krishna in New York. He said the UNSC had adopted a resolution seeking all non NPT signatories to join the treaty but India, which views it as discriminatory, refused to accept it. The senior US official said that discussion between Mr. Krishna and Mr. Clinton also included cooperation between India and the US on higher education.Meanwhile; US President Barack Obama has assured Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh that the UN Security Council resolution asking non-NPT states to sign the proliferation treaty is not directed against India and that his country will fulfill all obligations with regard to the nuclear deal. The Prime Minister told reporters in Pittsburgh that we have been assured that this is not a resolution directed against India and that the US commitment to carry out its obligations under the civil nuclear agreement, which we have signed with the United States, remains undiluted. He was replying to a question about the UNSC resolution asking all non-NPT states, including India, to sign the treaty.Asked whether he had any bilateral meetings with Mr. Obama, the Prime Minister said the US President did not have bilateral meetings with any leaders because of paucity of time. Dr. Manmohan Singh said he met Mr. Obama last night and discussed some important issues with him.
