The power generation in the country has exceeded its consumption demand as on today. Replying to supplementaries during the question hour in the Rajya Sabha today, the Power Minister, Mr Sushil Kumar Shinde said the country’s power generation touched the mark of 1 lakh 85 thousand Mega Watts as against the consumption of 1 lakh 8 thousand mega watts.
He said never in history, 60 thousand mega watts had been generated within 5 and a half year. He denied the opposition allegation that there is a slow progress in the implementation of
electrification programmes under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY).
Earlier, replying to the main question, the Minister of State for Power, Mr K C Venugopal said the government has decided to install small transformers in villages in order to avoid power theft and reduce transmission losses.
