India's population is expected to touch the 132 crore mark by March 2020 as against the over 117 crore now. The population projections are contained in a report of the Technical Group, constituted by the National Commission on Population. Giving this information in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, the Health and Family Welfare Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad said as per the revised projections by the United Nations, the population of India will be 136.72 crore in 2020 and it will continue to be second most populous country in the world. He said the national population policy adopted by India provides for a holistic approach for achieving population stabilization. He said the policy affirms the commitment of the government towards voluntary and informed choice and consent of citizens while availing of reproductive health care services and continuation of the target free approach in administering family planning services.
